How Do You Know When It’s the Right Time to Move?
One of the most common questions I get asked as a real estate agent isn’t about interest rates or home prices.
It’s this:
"How do I know when it’s the right time to move?"
And honestly? The answer usually has very little to do with the market and everything to do with your life.
The Truth Most People Don’t Expect
People often think they need the “perfect” conditions before making a move:
• Perfect interest rates
• Perfect home prices
• Perfect timing
• Perfect savings
But after helping families across the Kansas City area for years, I’ve learned something important:
Most moves happen because life changes — not because the market does.
Signs It Might Be Time to Consider a Move
Everyone’s situation is different, but here are some of the most common reasons I see people start thinking about their next chapter:
You've Outgrown Your Space
Maybe your family has grown. Maybe you’re working from home more. Maybe the house just feels tight. When your home no longer fits your daily life, it might be time to explore options.
You Want Less Maintenance
Sometimes the opposite happens. Kids move out, schedules change, and maintaining a larger home no longer makes sense. Downsizing can bring freedom, simplicity, and lower expenses.
Your Location No Longer Fits Your Life
Commutes change. Schools change. Jobs change. Sometimes people just want to be closer to what matters most to them.
You Want Something Different
For some people it's land. For others it's a newer home. For others it's a neighborhood change. And sometimes it's simply wanting a fresh start.
And all of those are valid reasons.
You Don't Have to Be "Ready" Yet
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you should only talk to a Realtor when you're ready to move immediately.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Some of the best conversations I have are with people who are 6–12 months away from making a decision. Having early conversations helps people understand:
• What their home might be worth
• What buying could look like
• What their timing options are
• What steps make sense to take now
Information reduces stress. Planning creates confidence.
Sometimes It Just Starts With a Conversation
You don't have to have everything figured out.
You don't have to be pre-approved.
You don't have to have your home ready.
You don't even have to know if you will move.
Sometimes it just starts with asking questions.
Wondering If Moving Makes Sense For You?
If you've been thinking about moving — even if it's just a small thought in the back of your mind — it might be worth talking through your options.
I help people at all stages:
• Just starting to think
• 6–12 months out
• Getting serious
• Ready now
You don't have to be ready. You just have to be curious.
Sometimes a 10-minute conversation gives you more clarity than months of wondering.
